The role of prostaglandins in ripening of cervix, induction of labour and control of Postpartum Haemorrhage

چکیده
Recently, investigators have shown the use of alternative prostaglandin PGE1 Misoprostol for cervical ripening and induction of labour.1,2 It is prostaglandin E1 analogue, which was introduced as the treatment of gastric ulcer, but later on FDA approved a new label for the use of Misoprostol during pregnancy.3 It has been used for many years for the first and second trimesters of pregnancy termination and induction of labour, because it acts as uterotonic and softens the cervix by increasing proteoglycon content and changing the biophysical properties of collagen.4 Misoprostol can be administered orally, rectally or vaginally for the induction of labour. Intravaginal Misoprostol is an efficacious, economical and safe method of induction of labour in patients with toxemia of pregnancy, even with modified Bishop’s score of < 4 in eclampsia.5,6

Intracervical Foley catheter for induction of labour.
Labour is induced in about 20% of pregnant women in high-income countries, making it one of the most frequently done obstetric interventions. Induction is commonly off ered to women at 41 weeks’ gestation or greater, to reduce the risk of perinatal death. Induction is also indicated in suspected maternal or fetal compromise, such as pregnancy-induced hypertension at term, for which delivery is ...
متن کاملPostpartum Haemorrhage: Still a Big Issue in Maternity Care - What is Going Wrong?

This is despite a wide-spread coverage of active third stage of labour care in many countries. Reflecting on emerging evidence in this context, a discussion of associated factors which should be considered in interpretation of the evidence and its implications is presented ...
متن کاملBreast stimulation for cervical ripening and induction of labour.
BACKGROUND Breast stimulation has been suggested as a means of inducing labour. It is a non-medical intervention allowing women greater control over the induction process. This is one of a series of reviews of methods of cervical ripening and labour induction using a standardised methodology. OBJECTIVES To determine the effectiveness of breast stimulation for third trimester cervical ripening...
متن کاملComparison of the Efficacy of PGE2 Suppository and Cervical Foley Catheter with Pre-induction Ripening of the Cervix
Background: An increasing success in induction of labor and subsequent termination of pregnancy in presence of unfavorable cervix requires cervical ripening in order to reduce complications and to diminish the rate of cesarean sections as well as the duration of labor. However, there is no consensus on the efficiency of conventional methods for cervical ripening. Objective: To determine and co...

Abstract The aim of this study was comparing the efficacy of induction of labor using balloon Foley catheter with conventional Oxytocin infusion method in cases of unfavorable cervix. 60 pregnant women that had an indication for induction of labor with a singleton vertex fetuses, intact membranes, and bishop score lower than 4 interred in this study and allocated in one of two induction method...
